India to get first all women IIT

Nagpur: As government is increasing number of seats in existing IITs and planning to brought up new IITs in the country, there are proposals to build IIT for females in Amravati, Maharashtra. The place is hometown of H.E. President Smt. Pratibha Patil. The ideas to build first all women IIT came from Saint Gadgebaba University vice-chancellor Kamal Singh. The HRD ministry has already sent the proposal in this regard to Prime Minister Office for consideration.

MUMBAI: From this academic year (2008 - 09) the out of state students in NITs shall be admitted on the basis of All India Rank in AIEEE instead of state rank. India has 20 NITs. The central government has already given the directives to NITs, such decision was taken because earlier when students were selected on the basis of state rank there were occasions when a student having low all India rank secured admission while other having rank left behind. The central government is acting to upgrade regional engineering colleges in the country since 2002. In 2007 the government has passed the NIT Act under which all the NITs are declared institute of national importance.

Whatever government has done might be in the interest of the aspirants. In my opinion there shall be only two types of quota or reservation. One state and other national, considering the geography of India student from the local state must be given preference if he / she wish to study within the state institute. This shall prevent the escape of human resources from state. For example a student who comes to Delhi for study never goes back to home state. And this number is not only 1 but in thousands per year. This creates overburden on a particular region at one hand and left other region under developed. Meanwhile if students would be given chance and encouraged to learn within the state they would add to development at much better pace of the native state.

The University of Delhi is planning to introduce new BEd programs from next academic session.

The new pragram shall be more practice based. Instead of one year the program duration would be two years. The DU's faculty of education is also working with the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) on a research-based project on how to make mentors more effective.

Amity offers courses which hone special skills

NEW DELHI: At a time when more and more students want to turn their passion into career, Amity University has come out with innovative programmes to attract and groom budding talents. Categorising them under talented-oriented courses, the university has started programmes in music, dance, sports psychology and competitive intelligence & corporate warfare.

"These courses are especially meant for those seeking to hone their skills in their fields of interest. The best part is that students will land up jobs after completing the courses," said varsity's founder president Ashok Chuahan.

The varsity, which has sold more than a lakh forms this year, also provides a number of professional courses like degrees in biotechnology, nano technology, MBA and engineering. Aiming to create a niche in the science stream, it has announced courses in virology, immunology, space science, avionics and oceanology. Looking at the growing demand for foreign languages, the university has started honours courses in English, French and Spanish.

Commenting on university's move to introduce more courses, Chauhan said: "There is a dearth of quality education in our country, and we are trying to bridge this gap. Most of the government colleges lack modern infrastructure and techniques. We are introducing courses according to the demands of the market. To blend the best of East and West, we conduct exchange programmes with foreign universities."

The university has got tremendous response for its nano technology course. "Amity is the first and only university providing degree courses in the subject. Though we already have two PG and one UG course, we are also planning to start three more courses looking at the growing demand both in India and abroad," said director of nano technology department, R P Singh.

Talking about placements, Chauhan said: "Over 2,500 students have got on-campus recruitments this year and around 800 students have been placed a year before graduating. Leading companies across various disciplines come for campus placements at Amity."

Brushing aside criticism that Amity is meant only for students from the higher strata of society, Chauhan said: "We are not funded by the government, so the expenses can only be shared between the university and students. We provide scholarship to meritorious students."

USD 600 M from World Bank to SSA

Washington: The Bank has approved USD 600 million to India’s Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). "The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan programme has served as a powerful vehicle to mobilise stakeholders at all community, district, state, and national levels around the objective of ensuring that every child from 6 to 14 years is included in the education system," said Isabel Guerrero, World Bank Country Director for India.

"The challenge now is to include those hardest to reach and to ensure that children get the quality education which is a critical foundation for both higher levels of education and creating the skills needed to have a significant impact on economic development," he further added.

The project is the second phase (SSA - II) of support by the development partners to the government's ongoing and evolving SSA program. The estimated cost of SSA II is USD 10.7 billion. The Government of India will provide about 53.7% of this, 36.9% will come from different states and rest 9.4 % from development partners.

ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS
2. Age. 19 & 1/2 to 25 years (candidate to be born between 02 Jan 1984 to 01 Jul 1989; both dates inclusive).
3. Educational Qualifications.: BE/B Tech (or equivalent) from a institution recognized by AICTE with minimum 55% marks in aggregate. Calculation for aggregate percentage should be based on total marks obtained in all the semesters (including I & II), divided by total number of semesters, in any of the following disciplines :-

(a) Engineering Branch: (i) Mechanical, (ii) Production, (iii) Aeronautical, (iv) Marine, (v) Control.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

7. (a) The candidates will be issued call up for Services Selection Board (SSB) interviews based on their performance in BE/B Tech Degree qualification. No communication will be entertained on this account.

(b) SSB interviews for short listed candidates will be scheduled during Jul- Dec 08 at Bangalore, Bhopal or Coimbatore.

(c) Total duration of SSB interviews is of 5 days, consisting of Stage I (Day one) and Stage II (Four days). Stage I Tests, consist of Intelligence Tests, Picture Perception and Group Discussion Tests. Candidates who fail to qualify in Stage I will be routed back on the same day from SSB centre. Stage II Tests consist of Psychological Tests, Group Task Tests and Interview. Successful candidates will therafter undergo Special Medical Examination at the same venue (approx duration 3-5 days).

(d) Candidates recommended by the SSBs and declared medically fit, will be appointed for training in order of all India merit depending on the number of vacancies.

(e) Change of SSB centre for interview is not permissible under any circumstances.

(f) Any correspondence regarding change of SSB dates be addressed to the President of the SSB on receipt of call up letter and copy endorsed to Directorate of Manpower Planning & Recruitment (OI&R), Room No. 204, `C Wing, Sena Bhawan, IHQ-MOD (N), New Delhi-110011 (Fax No. 011-23011282).

(g) No compensation will be paid in respect of any injury sustained as a result of tests.

TRAINING

B. The training is scheduled to commence in Jan 2009

9. Candidates will be inducted as officers in the rank of Sub Lieutenant and undergo Naval Orientation Course at the Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala, followed by professional training at various Naval Training Establishments/ Units/ Ships. Full pay and allowances are admissible to officers whilst under training. They will be on probation for a period of two years, during which they are liable to be discharged if their performance is unsatisfactory.

10. Only unmarried candidates are eligible to undergo training. Any candidate who is found to be married or marries while under training will be discharged. He shall be liable to refund full pay & allowances drawn by him and the expenditure incurred on him by the Government.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

7. (a) The candidates will be issued call up for Services Selection Board (SSB) interviews based on their performance in BE/B Tech Degree qualification. No communication will be entertained on this account.

(b) SSB interviews for short listed candidates will be scheduled during Jul- Dec 08 at Bangalore, Bhopal or Coimbatore.

(c) Total duration of SSB interviews is of 5 days, consisting of Stage I (Day one) and Stage II (Four days). Stage I Tests, consist of Intelligence Tests, Picture Perception and Group Discussion Tests. Candidates who fail to qualify in Stage I will be routed back on the same day from SSB centre. Stage II Tests consist of Psychological Tests, Group Task Tests and Interview. Successful candidates will therafter undergo Special Medical Examination at the same venue (approx duration 3-5 days).

(d) Candidates recommended by the SSBs and declared medically fit, will be appointed for training in order of all India merit depending on the number of vacancies.

(e) Change of SSB centre for interview is not permissible under any circumstances.

(f) Any correspondence regarding change of SSB dates be addressed to the President of the SSB on receipt of call up letter and copy endorsed to Directorate of Manpower Planning & Recruitment (OI&R), Room No. 204, `C Wing, Sena Bhawan, IHQ-MOD (N), New Delhi-110011 (Fax No. 011-23011282).

(g) No compensation will be paid in respect of any injury sustained as a result of tests.

(h) Return 2nd Class Sleeper rail fare is admissible for the SSB interview, if appearing for the first time for the entry.

TRAINING

B. The training is scheduled to commence in Jan 2009

9. Candidates will be inducted as officers in the rank of Sub Lieutenant and undergo Naval Orientation Course at the Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala, followed by professional training at various Naval Training Establishments/ Units/ Ships. Full pay and allowances are admissible to officers whilst under training. They will be on probation for a period of two years, during which they are liable to be discharged if their performance is unsatisfactory.

10. Only unmarried candidates are eligible to undergo training. Any candidate who is found to be married or marries while under training will be discharged. He shall be liable to refund full pay & allowances drawn by him and the expenditure incurred on him by the Government.

Gujarat Kids to learn Chess

Ahmedabad: Gujarat government has decided to promote chess in school. For the purpose the teachers in the school would be taught the game. This has announced on Monday by Gujarat State Chess Association president and Home Minister Amit Shah. "The programme of today may be a small affair but our initiative to bring home chess to school children is a giant step," said Mr. Shah. As a first step in this direction a weeklong training of 1,500 schoolteachers started on Monday at the Rifle Club here. "We have undertaken to provide a platform for children to showcase their talents at the national and international level in the future," Mr. Shah said.

Chennai's class XII students in top 3, girls ahead of boys

CHENNAI: It was party time for schools in Chennai on Friday. In the state board +2 examination non Tamil category, students from Chennai got top 3 positions. A total of 5,87,994 students appeared for this examination. This year pass out rate is 84.4%, which is 3.4% high from last year’s examination. Once more girls leave boys behind them. The number of students who secured full marks in individual subjects had gone up except in Commerce.

Asha Ganesan of Anna Adarsh Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Anna Nagar, secured the first rank in the non-Tamil category with 1191 marks out of 1200, She studied French as the First Language,. S Muralikrishnan from the DAV Higher Secondary School in Adambakkam was ranked second with 1188 and Harish Sriram, from DAV Matriculation Higher Secondary School Gopalapuram secured third position with 1187 marks. Both had studied Sanskrit as the First Language.
